Kingston Nucleum: The Hub You Waited For

As a Mac user and Apple fan I can’t say I was surprised by the change but knew it would take some time to get used to it. That change? A few years ago Apple started putting only USB-C ports on their laptops. The wonderful days of Magsafe were gone but we are left with some pretty powerful ports and fast charging. A world of speed and connection had been opened, now and beyond.
The only problem was your old stuff.  Your mouse. Your graphics tablet. Your camera cables. Your audio gear. Connecting them was now an issue! Cue the dongles, adapters and change cables. While many companies had come out with products, I hadn’t got any of them when I got my 2017 MBP. The reason was they were either unreasonably priced, had weird factors or simply were limited for my uses. So I waited with a few single port adapters. One of which is cool as it’s about the size of a piece of square gum, tiny! Easily lost too. But honestly the idea of so much stress on the small conenction did not sit well with me.

Cue the dongles, adapters and weird cables.

So when I heard about a well-priced, feature packed USB-C hub I had to check it out.

Enter the Kingston Nucleum. Of course we all know the Kingston name from anything between storage cards, to ram, to thumb drives. After finding it I was pretty stoked to check it out. Strangely after I bought it online directly from them, they are now out of stock. Must be hot!
So what does it actually have? Let’s look at the ports.

  • 2 USB-C Ports
  • 2 USB-A 3.1 Ports
  • HDMI Out
  • SD Card Reader
  • Mini SD Card Reader

Wow, not bad at all. For those moving from an older MBP the card reader is essential. For anyone shooting video or images the ability to load them directly is amazing and can save time and camera battery.
One particular thing to note was the HDMI Out. I was pretty shocked to see this feature on a hub. It would seem like you would need another connection or the device would be at a higher price point but nope.

Conclusion:

Honestly I would recommend it if you find yourself plugging a lot of things in at once. Though it’s slim and relatively light, the almost candy-like adapter I mentioned earlier might be a good choice too. Mostly if you only connect a single thing at a time. Again the pressure on the ports scares me but do what you will there. Ultimately super happy with the purchase and feel confident the Nucleon will save me quite a bit of digital pain.
